I think it is premature to begin writing our epitath. I read with great
interest the userlinux white paper (http://userlinux.com/white_paper.html) by
Bruce Perens and I agree with his opinion that "Linux distribution works
poorly as a profit-center." I think we can see that in the consolidation now
going on in the Linux distribution business. Just a year ago it looked as if
commercial Linux distributors would render user lists such as this obsolete.
But, now it's obvious that they can remain in business only by catering to a
select group of large businesses. The rest of us, small & medium size
businesses, will continue to use non-commercial distributions and depend upon
the Linux community for support.
