dia users?

Has anyone tried producing diagrams with dia?  All in all. it's pretty slick, 
but I can't figure out how to add text to a box.

I've RTFM'd and googled untill I'm blue in the face.

When you select the text tool, it ads a little glitch about 20 pixels square 
with an x in it and no handles.  No combination of keystrokes, mouse 
buttones, menus, etc. that I've tried allow me to add text to that glitch, 
although you can drag the glitch around.
