Cross platform scripting language and database

In our dept of Pathology we are taking digital photos. I need to arrange
an easy way to store and catalogue them. There needs to be an easy way
for people to retrieve them based on accession numbers or subject
matter.

I hope to use convert and identify from the imagemagick package to add
comments to the image, so each image will contain all the information
required to understand it. It should be easy to include the entire
pathological diagnosis in each image, and later let another program
extract this information for a simple data base.
