anyone using vmware with 2.4.23 ?

Subject pretty much says it all.  Is anyone using vmware under 2.4.23? 
I'm running vmware-config.pl to build the networking modules, and its 
bombing out:

gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory

make[2]: Leaving directory

make[1]: *** [driver] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only'
make: *** [auto-build] Error 2
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only'
Unable to build the vmmon module.

It worked fine for all the previous 2.4.x kernels.  And yes, 'as' is in 
my $PATH, and is executable.
