Sounds like all you need to do is add a crontab entry for root (or
whoever would update the virus signature file) like this:
0 1 * * * check-updates.pl
--
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
