Obviously neither Debian nor Gentoo nor any other servers are totally imune from
compromises.  It sounds like the gentoo bunch detected the bogus actions just in
time to prevent much damage - detection and analysis tools in place, server
offline within a few minutes of the attack.

The interesting thing is how few linux servers as compared with Windows servers
and the army of clueless Windows user boxes which become unwitting spam servers
are successfully attacked
