To date I have used mostly used Caldera, Mandrake, Redhat... but I prefer
to compile from source for the `learning experience'. I'm sure I must have
come up against the same sort of problem and never known why before.

I wonder, as things progress, will the work arounds provided by binary
distributions make it more and more difficult to compile everything from
source?
