bad substitution

ok. someone from the harbour listtold me that it's a bash version problem.

The bash 1.14 on COL 3.1 is possibly too old to handle it.
The latest version is 2.05b with patches according to linuxfromscratch.

I wonder whether anyyone here had encountered similar problem before.
