Also, there are so many more resources out there now than a few years ago.

It is also possible desktop linux has stalled. There was a flurry of 
interest, but maybe it's passing. Only the truly interested are sticking 
with it? Just speculation... I think the releases now are much more 
usable, simplified, so fewer questions. This makes it a bit tougher to 
learn by answering, which is how I have learned a lot.
