play is provided by sox.  On gentoo, the current package is sox-12.17.3-r3.

BTW, I have a longstanding gripe with the gentoo folks, since they never include
sox as a prereq or option for xfce, even though sound doesn't work without it or
some other package.

All bets are off for XFCE4, since there's (yet) no sound effects.
