I'll second the Epson 1660 recommendation. These are being sold at
discounted prices now. The Epson 2400 and 3200 are also good Linux
scanners.
The "photo" models have a built in backlight, and xsane will turn it on
when you select transparency source.
I would also recommend against the new Epson XX70 series scanners. They
are not compatible with Linux (at least for now.)
