Sometimes not an option depending on the box. And some motherboards 
don't seem to quite live up to the 500mA spec for USB; that's the 
"juice" I was referring to rather than the power available to the whole 
system. But what's one more wall-wart among dozens ;-)

(Underneath my desk looks like somebody lobbed some serious ordnance 
into a wire & cable factory.)

I used the StarTech USB 2.0 cards as far back as RH 7.3 and it was 
effortless plug and play. Don't know about other cards or chipsets.
