mozilla causing system lockups?

I'm running glibc-2.3.2 w/ Mozilla 1.5.  That RPMS directory is
incredibly massive and is causing my hard drive to do a _lot_ of
thrashing, but Mozilla keeps chugging along (using more and more
memory).  Appears some moron decided it would be a good idea to use
pretty icons while rendering this _huge_ directory (fancy indexing on). 
No blow-ups, but things with Mozilla just keep getting slower as the
massive directory keeps loading.
