mozilla causing system lockups?

Not a clue.  I've only used the MozillaFirebird releases for the past year, and
I've never experienced lockups of the machine.  When using the FB 0.7 released
code, I experienced a number of instances of "poof, it's gone" (usually related
to downloads) and a repeatable problem with print (hang of FB only, had to kill
all FB tasks), but no such troubles now that I have upgraded to the latest
nightly download.

Daring to state the obvious: the behavior you describe is most frequently an X
and/or video driver problem.
