Well, you have to cd /usr/src/linux before you run make xconfig.
/usr/src/linux is  usually the symbolic link to your most recent linux
sources.

Go slow. You may learn a lot more than you want.

P.S. I am still using Caldera 2.4 on my serious, working boxes. (Reduced
to one by an untimely, recent hard drive malfunction.) I switched to
lindows for mindless, instant gratification on some newer boxes, though.
