Introducing a New Database from MySQL AB: MaxDB!
* MaxDB is a heavy-duty, SAP-certified open source database that offers
high availability, scalability and a comprehensive feature set.
* MaxDB is ideal for large SAP R/3 environments and other applications
that require maximum enterprise-grade database functionality.
* Today, about 5,000 customer installations are using MaxDB technology
globally, including Intel, DaimlerChrysler, Braun, Bayer, Colgate,
Yamaha, Deutsche Post (the German Post Office) and Toyota South Africa.
Short Background
* MaxDB by MySQL is a re-branded and enhanced version of SAP DB, SAP
AG's open source database.
* Through a technology and cross licensing partnership with SAP AG,
MySQL AB has acquired full commercial rights to develop and market
future releases of SAP DB.
MaxDB features beyond those currently available in MySQL
* Views
* Server Side Cursors
* Stored Procedures and Triggers
* Automatic failover (to standby server)
* Scheduling and automatic messaging on alerts
* Snapshots
* Archive tables

MaxDB/MySQL Interoperability features
* MySQL Proxy, which will enable a user to connect using the
mysql-protocol to the MaxDB server. Thus, the user will be able to use
familiar MySQL client tools like mysql, mysqlshow, mysqldump to both
databases. This will make it possible to easily dump the database
content from one of the servers and pipe it into the other one. The
MySQL Proxy is released in alpha development version now, and it works
with the MaxDB alpha development version server.
* Interoperability Replication, which will make it possible to set up a
replication between a MaxDB and a MySQL server, where either part can
act as the master and the other as the slave. The Interoperability
Replication is scheduled for release in Q1/2004.
In any questions regarding the release and MaxDB, please feel free to
