I have officially decided to accept a position with VA Software (VA Linux).
So, as of Sept 29, 2003, I'll be out in California with Llama. That's change
#1. This move should not adversely affect the site in any way.
Change #2 - if you are running a private mirror, you need to change your rsync
scripts. Please contact me off-list for the details. Roger has volunteered to
be the primary rsync server to help lighten the bandwidth load of the
mothership and to help with the current single-point-of-failure we have.
Change #3 - I'm moving the website off the machine in my basement to a hosting
facility. Starting next week, the mothership will be coming from a Westhost
machine over HUGE pipes. I'm picking up the cost of the hosting out of my
pocket as part of my contributions to the community. I'm VERY excited about
this move. Please note that there might be some issues with the site during
the transition.
Change #4 - This won't be happening for a little while yet, but we're also
splitting the mail services off the mothership and getting a new box on
different pipes (different continent) for the mail duties. More details as
this comes together...
Once all the above are completed, there will no longer be a
single-point-of-failure for you, the community. All the major services will
be hosted by different people on different boxes on different networks. The
Editors team are still working on cleaning up and re-organizing the site and
are on the "home stretch". I'd like to take a moment to publically thank them
for their efforts on this. I worked up the initial site redesign and then
basically dumped it on them. I intended to take lead on the cleanup, but my
job (at the time) had other ideas. Fortunately, the team of Editors picked up
the ball and ran with it. Kudos to you guys.
I'd also like to take a moment to publically thank our esteemed mirrors around
the world. We've recently had some issues with the mirror synchronization and
everyone chipped in with help and ideas on how to fix it and get around the
issues. I'm very pleased to say that *ALL* of our mirrors are now in perfect
sync with the mothership. Way to go guys!
With that, I'm signing off for the weekend to have a life. Lots to do before I
jet to CA. If you need me, email me. But don't expect an answer till Mon. If
there's an emergency, send a *short* message to admin at linux-sxs.org and my
phone will let me know I'm needed.
Later folks!
