Sorry if it seems I'm asking to be spoonfed, but I am fearful of hosing the 
boot process altogether.  Here are the relevant lines of'menu.lst':

#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage= (hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.7-10)
              root (hd1,0)
               kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.7-10 ro root=/dev/hdd3 hdc=ide-scsi
                initrd /initrd - 2.4.7-10.img

Should that crosshatch be present before the first line (#boot=/dev/hda) ??
When you say to edit this file,   where would I put the "appropriate lines" 
and what is the syntax?
