nested screen sessions

I did something really stupid today, and started a screen session within 
a screen session.  as a result, i can't figure out how to detach from 
the innermost screen session.  whenever i hit control-a-d it detaches me 
from the outer session, and leaves the inner one running, which is the 
opposite of what i want.  anyone know the magic?
