How about "simply":
1) buying a second drive,
2) installing it as the master on the primary
controller,
3) install LILO on this new drive
4) config LILO to boot:
  a) Windows off hda
  b) Linux off hdb but to swap drive mappings between
hda and hdb

Hopefully, you'll be able to boot either OS without
changes. You'll also have the added benefit of
removing the Linux HD before installing WinXP thereby
eliminating the possibility that WinXP will
automatically reformat the the Linux HD.

Brad.
