Easy umlauts?

I made the changes to my XF86Config-4 file, and it worked. My keyboard
is now international. I have those four dead keys. However, when I type
something like "u I don't get anything. If I type a dead key followed
by a space, I do get the dead key.

So, I am still missing something.

Also, with dumpkeys, not all of the compose characters start with a dead
key, some, like the the German ss, start with s, like so:

compose 's' 'z' to "_' (The space is the unrepresentable ss.)

Any insight appreciated,

Thanks,

Joel
