I set numlock to default off in the BIOS on all of my boxes.

Why, you ask?  Force of habit.  Back when I was using DOS, I needed to 
use extended ASCII characters for German documents.
With DOS WP6.x, alt + xxx (e.g. alt + 129  from the numeric key pad 
prints an umlaut u, alt + 225 the "eszet" double s character.)
Numlock has to be off for this to work.  Perversely, with Windows, the 
same procedure works, but with numlock on.

One thing I do not like about Linux is the absence of this facility.  
Either I use a German language keyboard, or poke around in the WP insert 
character menu.  Typing German is much easier and faster for me using 
DOS WP6.2, and that is why I keep a DOS box up and running.
