I set numlock to default off in the BIOS on all of my boxes.
Why, you ask? Force of habit. Back when I was using DOS, I needed to
use extended ASCII characters for German documents.
With DOS WP6.x, alt + xxx (e.g. alt + 129 from the numeric key pad
prints an umlaut u, alt + 225 the "eszet" double s character.)
Numlock has to be off for this to work. Perversely, with Windows, the
same procedure works, but with numlock on.
One thing I do not like about Linux is the absence of this facility.
Either I use a German language keyboard, or poke around in the WP insert
character menu. Typing German is much easier and faster for me using
DOS WP6.2, and that is why I keep a DOS box up and running.
