I know that in the case of GM, they let the company run as it did before.
They just provide better support. Both SAAB and Volvo were quite
profitable when sold and have remained that way. It may be a matter of not
fixing something not broken. Of course, this is seldom a feature of large
corps. But, SAAB and Volvo are not so small themselves. Volvo and SAAB
trucks (still 'Swedish' - not sold to Ford/GM) are the biggest sellers in
the world. You may be surprised which truck brands are owned by either
Volvo or SAAB/Scania. And SAAB aircraft is big. Both commercial and
military.
