Gentoo flag waving ...

Wow ! That's amazing. I "upgraded" to Red Hat 8.0 finally, after trying
to put it off as long as I could. Didn't have a choice because
SpectraLinux seems to have disappeared.
I remember now why I hated Red Hat so much. The installer dumps a *LOT*
of crap into your hard disk. I didn't think there was so much crap out
there! I spent an entire day pruning the system, getting libraries and
applications that I needed just to get Apache 2 and Java working
properly. With SpectraLinux, my whole setup worked, right out of the
box. I suppose the (only) good thing about RH is that the fonts look
better than when I tried tuning them manually on TurboLinux, and the
icons and interface are quite pretty. I guess, like women, the pretty
ones require higher maintenance and work worse (sigh!). And the strange
widgets and applets they created make it very hard to see the wood for
the trees. I noticed that they now have a "Services" applet -- the
terminology irks me no end, because it seems like they're trying to make
it like NT, a bad model to begin with. Why can't everyone learn how to
start "services" from the command line ?
I used to be able to run a relatively small 400MB Linux server on
TurboLinux, and I wish I could go back to something like that. How big
is Gentoo anyway ?
