DVD recording

There was a thread about DVD recording software a week or so back.
I think one question was about tools to record DVDs. I do not as yet have a
recordable DVD yet, but I was wondering if anyone with one has investigated
these tools, and it they work. I am primarily interested in data storage,
preferably in an OS independent format.

(This is from the Gentoo ebuild scripts for each. As I do not have a
recorder, I have not installed them. Sorry about the line splitting in some
of the file names. E-mail text and all...)
