suse 8.2 networking -- printer solved

Yee Hah!  :)

I use Yast2 and choose LaserJet 3 driver and I'm given 7 choices for filters.  If I choose the stp driver for LaserJet III series, I'm ok.  I can also choose the other CUPS tools.

You need to make sure that you set the paper size to US Letter in 2 places.

It's not non-cups, it's non-yast2.  There's a big difference.  The difference means that the printer was or wasn't created through Yast2.
