I just went through the motions of installing an LJIII on parallel port 
lp0. (which I don't have at the moment)  and the only think I saw that 
was non-cups was under the 'model selection' there was a button that 
said 'use non-YAST2 ppd file'.  I've never used that....  Did you?

But other than that, I didn't see any reference to a non-cups printer.

Just used YAST on the remote site where the LJiii is and here is what 
YAST shows for the printer:


 HP LaserJet III series: Parallel   
   printer on /dev/lp0   
   Configured as:  lp [test] 


I did an edit of the config and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
