Good way to start a flame war <g>, but I would say not really.

A year and a half ago on my 800MZ machine, FreeBSD 4.7 was much quicker at
loading KDE, etc., but now with my 1800AthlonXP machine thee's not much
difference. It could be that gentoo/KDE have gotten better, too.

The basic truism about FreeBSD is: if pick-a-peripheral is supported, it just
works automatically; otherwise, sorry Charley, wait a year. For example, the
kernel supplied with the ISO didn't have sound support. All I had to do was
add one line to the kernel config, make a new kernel (the old kernel is
renamed automatically), and reboot. FreeBSD now uses devfs, so the devices
were made automatically, and I didn't need to screw around with module load
list, etc., or fix up any permissions to use sound as a normal user.

Since I'm using KDE, thee is nothing visual that tells me I'm not running
linux. Since it's pretty much a linux world, FreeBSD has very good linux
compatibility support.
