KDE3.1.1a compiled and install now sound is root only

Thanks for the pointers guys and yes you are right it was perms based

With my mandrake system the sound devs are all symlinked from 
/dev/devicename --> /dev/sound/devicename as a standard user I couldn't 
even ls the /dev/sound directory.

so the fix was

chmod 666 /dev/sound -Rv
chmod 4755 /opt/bin/artswrapper

I think that's all I did anyway and now it works.

I will have to wait till a reboot till I find out if console.perms is 
going to reset everything to not work again.
