KDE3.1.1a compiled and install now sound is root only

Folks,

I have just compiled and installed kde3.1.1a on a MDK9.0 with a standard 
kernel but the latest glib and gtk (so I can use the latest cvs dia and 
gaim). I changed the location of the kde install from the standard /usr 
to /opt.

When I run kmix as a standard user I get no sound card tabs, as root 
everything works fine. I have googled this but I'm not sure if I'm 
asking the right questions.

My question is what to do I have to adjust so artsdsp kmix xmms etc 
works from within my kde3.1.1a environment as a standard user?
