No joy with the -f option. It did indeed work up a storm, but the
slow startup and slow switch back to X after a VT switch remain.

After started, I do get the same startup time for apps. It is just this
initial time.

I guess the X server does a VT switch to run graphics, which is why the
initial startup time is slow. I wonder what could cause that to suddenly
take more time?

I have also tried switching between the Xfree86 nvidia driver, as well as
the same Nivdia-supplied one I always used, and the latest. No difference.
