Gentoo nugget.. (All is not gold (nugget, get it) anymore)

Speaking of Gentoo. To all Gentoo users on the list:
I had a problem a while back wherein my gentoo partition became a bit
corrupt. I could mount it, but not boot it. Many image files even got
corrupted, demonstrating that file corruption had indeed occurred.
So, I did a reinstall of Gentoo from the latest CD. All worked like a charm.
I even finally got all the fancy font stuff in KDE working consistently. All
was bliss. Birds were singing. Buds on the trees and all that.
So, in my euphoric (lack of oxygen?) state, I upgraded to XFreee 3.0. The
stable ebuild. Taking no chances and all. I was on an X roll.
Well, to my dismay, not only did the antialiasing drop off the edge of the
earth, the X system developed a problem: xdm/kdm is slow to start (over 1
minute). The mouse does oddly work during this. I found that this was
discussed in the Gentoo forums, but the solutions did not solve it. When
waiting for the display manager (either) to start, the system will not even
do a VT switch until the 1 minute has passed. I see that if I do a VT switch
when logged in (KDE), I get to the other terminal as expected. However, when
I switch back to X, the display takes a similiar 1 minute to render.
The problem began after only X was upgraded.
I have re-emerged (from suggestions on the forums):
X
fontconfig
kde
I have run fc-cache as root and others.
Nothing changes this.
Feathers are also seen in the vicinity...
