No valuable knowledge here, so no valuable advice.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but these are the type of experiences you
can't get from a book, and while painful, it does have benefits.

I seriously doubt it. More likely a change made since the last restart
of your X server, but before you ran up2date.

The up2date of glibc used to break several xfs tools such as xfsdump
back around xfs v.1.0.2, however it doesn't break anything since 1.1. I
feel safe using up2date for everything but the kernel, which is excluded
by default. (especially since the errata kernels are for ext3, not xfs)

Check out fam to keep track of your file alterations. Tripwire will work
too if configured properly.
