What I used to do with a modem connection is force a connection every
hour for 10 minutes or so. Upon connection, when the system was
assigned an IP address, it would send an e-mail with the new IP. I
could connect to my e-mail, see the address, and connect to my house.
With my DSL connection, that's not necessary, since it only changes once
every six months or so.
