devfs

Since installing Slackware 9.0, I've noticed that when I go to compile 
the kernel (2.4.20) that devfs is greyed out and is not selectable. I 
have tried the plain vanilla from kernel.org and I've tried the patched 
(ext3 fs)  both exhibit the same problem. This same kernel compiled 
devfs correctly under Slack 8.1.. I must be overlooking something basic 
here but can't figure out what that is.
