I avoided Gentoo for the same reasons you have. If you have extra disk
space on your business machine, Gentoo can be compiled in the backround
from any other Linux distro while you are using it for other things. My
first Gentoo system was compiled from Caldera eDesktop 2.4 while I was
using it. There is plenty of info on their website and enough users here
to get you through it the first time. It does take several days for the
initial install, but is time well spent IMHO. The best way to learn is
to dig in & do it. It is not as difficult as you may think.
I promise I will not use the "G" word again tonight, so you do not
confuse me with someone else ;)
