Even broadband isn't necessary.. I'm gentooing along on 28.8k just fine, tho I 
tend to use CVS versions and patch my kernel separately from emerge to save 
on download time.  I'd say more important is that you either have a fast box 
or don't mind waiting forever for everything to install (i.e. evolution)
