USB and Palm connection problem

Well, after much pain and time I got 2.4.20 to boot and run. (The sound
of course doesn't work anymore.) Now, here is what I get when I plug in
my Zire:
kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x converter detected
kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x: Number of ports: 2
kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x: port 1, is for Generic use and is bound to ttyUSB0
kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x: port 2, is for HotSync use and is bound to ttyUSB1
kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)
kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor / Palm 4.0 / Clii 4.x converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 for devfs)
kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Sony Clii 3.5
kernel: visor.c: USB HandSpring Visor, Palm m50x, Sony Clii driver v1.6
ETC/HOTPLUG/USB.AGENT: MISSING KERNEL OR USER MODE DRIVER VISOR
I put the error in caps.
When I try jpilot-sync, I get this:
/dev/usb/tts# jpilot-sync
****************************************
Syncing on device /dev/pilot Press the HotSync button now
****************************************
Of course I have already pressed the hotsync button on the Zire
Note: /dev/pilot points to /dev/usb/tts/1
My version of jpilot is .99.2
Here is lsmod during this time:
Module Size Used by Not tainted
visor 8576 0
usbserial 16608 0 [visor]
ide-scsi 7648 0
I do not know what is going on because the visor module loads
automatically when I plug in my Zire, although the ttyUSB thingees are
not created. Under 2.4.19 they were, so maybe I hit a wrong bottom when
I compiled 2.4.20. I do have the usb/tts/0 and 1 devices, however.
This is a definite improvement over 2.4.19, since before I was getting:
prod 0x830/0x70) is not claimed by any active driver
So, this is getting closer.
I tried to install the latest version of pilot-link but during configure I
get this error:
checking whether the C++ compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.
But:
# which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc
# ls -al /usr/bin/gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Apr 12 16:28 /usr/bin/gcc -> gcc-2.95
Any more clues?
Joel
