strange sound question

Have you solved this problem yet?
I have a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP board with the via 8235 sound chip which I think is 
the same as yours.  I have it working well with alsa 0.9rc7.  So I can 
probably help you with the setup if need be.  I am running Linux from scratch 
but that shouldn't make any difference.

I basically used the instructions from this site:

and added some of the stuff at the blfs site:
