unfortunately hacking XF86Config doesn't do it Ive already tried 
removing the unwanted modes

The problem I think is that the NEOMAGIC driver that detects the screen 
discovers a 800x600 LCD instead of the correct 1024x768 LCD and from 
there refuses to load anythiong above that first size.

With the default redhat X server it just wont see the correct LCD size 
despite explicitly declaring it.

I'm going to try and install X form the X site and see how I go.
