If you've got a commercial app that you need to run for business reasons (real 
world, no FSF utopia here) then odds are you're using either RH or SuSE.   In 
the US, more likely RH.  Other stuff may or may not work without major 
headaches.  To date the standards effort has not fixed this, though I'm still 
hopeful.  Businesses not large enough to have people who will compile their 
own stuff will continue to use prebuilt stuff and abide by the terms of the 
builders.  They can't afford to do otherwise.  All the major distros sunset 
their support, and most are shorter than MS without paying the big bucks for 
the Enterprise distros.  Eben and company live in whatever special place has 
soft and fuzzy reality and hard-edged ideaology instead of where I live which 
is usually the other way around, especially when dealing in computers.  
Besides, I spend too much time patching my darn Windows servers to have time 
to compile my Linux fixes from source! ;)
