What they meant by that was that PPro did a great job with 32-bit code (WinNT
is straight 32-bit) but ran slowly with 16-bit code (Win9x had lots of it) so
it ran the mainstream OSes badly, but NT pretty well. That relegated the
PPro to mostly server and midrange workstation tasks and limited sales quite
a lot. As a result, the 16-bit code paths were substantially optimized for
the release of the Pentium II. MS also spent more time getting rid of 16-bit
code in the Win9x series. It was market-speak alright, but how else do you
explain such things to those who don't know?
