I'm not sure what you mean "doesn't have the setup for xfce as a
standard offering" because XFCE is available as an option from the
window manager config screen. I've used it and it seems to work.

I had this problem, too. Twiddled with the display and eventually
got rid of it, but I couldn't really tell you what I did.
