Sound Servers on Linux - What the?

OK so I'll try opening the case and checking if the CD Audio cable is 
plugged into the motherboard. But shouldn't the sound be coming through 
from the OS not the cable?

Running the CD player apps as root doesn't seem to make a difference, 
still a deafening silence.
