Knoppix boots as a read-only system.  Normally, it detects partitions on 
your HD, and mounts them read-only as well, but gives you the ability to 
remount them read-write.  Now if you're not getting little icons for 
each HD partition, then i'm guessing its not detecting/mounting them.
