Step by step has some hints. For xfce I installed it, then from your user
account run xfce_setup - you only do it once. This copies the .xsession,
.xinit and other files over so xfce will run when you login or type startx.
Depending on what you are using now the procedure varies. Maybe others
like Lonnie can give you more details.
