Gimps Question: Resizing a selection or layer

Thanks for the ideas.

right click>tools>transform tools>crop and resize    

This method wouldn't work for me because I couldn't make it just resize the
item, it always cropped it.

So, I double clicked on the transform tool in the gimp menu, and that gives
the option to crop or resize, among other things, and that does just what I
want. This is looking good.

I am downloading the grokking the gimp book as I write this.
