I really suggest you look at perl+postgresql+ncurses

PostgreSQL is, at least, a true SQL database.  It has transaction support
and is ACID compliant.  MySQL is nothing more than a file system that uses
SQL queries.  Sure, it's fast, but it won't protect your data like a real
SQL database will.
