With HP- stay away from the 1000.  Anything listed as a Postscript 
printer will work, because it doesn't need a driver.  My 4M+ is really 
great- and only $75 off ebay.   Sure, its page count is around 69,000 
but I expect it to last many more thousands, unlike my HP PSC 750xi that 
took me two years to finally get setup in Linux (mainly because 
printer.c wasn't quite right for the longest time), and that is now 
relegated to any photos I may have to print, and scanning
