Actually I think this is used as a starting point for all builds, and
copies the default configuration to the .config file.  I haven't looked at
other distributions, but Caldera's puts the build configuration(s) properly
in their SPRMS so that mrproper will get you started at the same point as
their kernel-binaries RPM.

It's been a while since I built specialized kernel-binaries from Caldera's
SRPMS so I don't remember the exact details (e.g. file names).
